IP Convergence and VoIP
This month’s bTALK comes from the Contributing Editor of Virtualization Review Magazine, Greg Shields.
Voice, Video, TV, Mobile and more technologies are moving away from their separate proprietary systems and converging on IP based networks. In layman’s terms, these devices are being developed with computers inside them to enable them to communicate seamlessly with one another. The standard “Information Technology” (IT) team servicing computers is now becoming the “Information and Communications Technology” (ICT) Team servicing a wider range of technologies negating the need for multiple support providers.
VoIP is an acronym for “Voice over Internet Protocol” aka “Voice over IP.” In simple terms this means that phone calls are made over your internet connection instead of a local phone line. Many are familiar with “Vonage” which is a VoIP service for residential homes.
Businesses of all sizes are moving to VoIP because of many advantages:
- Handsets are reusable across many systems
- Lower telecommunication costs
- Simple maintenance and easy to use
- Less equipment needed by remote offices and workers
- Calls can be made/received directly from your PC
- Firefox and Outlook plug-ins allow click-to-call features
- Voicemail to email options
- Plus many more…
Burrtech’s approach to choosing a VoIP system is to keep it simple. A common purchasing mistake is overbuying or purchasing features that you don’t plan to use immediately. Remember that VoIP systems are often software upgradable and many of the components can be reused if you do purchase a new system in the future.
The primary components of a VoIP system include:
- Your phone number - One company must hold your primary phone number. There are many options that can be explained by a Burrtech representative
- Internet connection – An internet connection of DSL speeds or higher is recommended
- VoIP Server – Primary VoIP hardware which does all the processing for your phone system
- VoIP handsets – Handsets come in a variety of options from simple one line waiting room models to multi-line, color LCD models
- Power-over-Ethernet switches (optional) – These special switches provide power to your handsets so power supplies for each handset are not required
